The Bundesstiftung Bauakademie invites you to attend their Transformation Dialogue Mit der Bauwende gegen Wohnungslosigkeit; among the speakers is Ulrike Schartner, architect and partner at gaupenraub+/-. In our 2021 publication “Who’s Next? Homelessness, Architecture, and Cities”, two projects by the Viennese office are presented.

VinziRast-mittendrin is a student-initiated project that aims to provide people who are unstably housed with opportunities for both housing and employment. Ten apartments laid out across three floors house a total of thirty residents. The most unique feature of this project is the composition of residents: half are people who are unstably housed, while the other half are students.

VinziRast-mittendrin also functions as a social hub for people from all backgrounds, many of whom would normally have either limited or no contact with people experiencing homelessness.

The restaurant and guest garden on the ground floor and the roof studio allow regular contact to take place between marginalized and non-marginalized groups, which ultimately helps in reducing stigmatization.

The architectural firm gaupenraub+/- has been committed to the realization of the VinziDorf in Vienna since 2002. The project, however, came to fruition only fifteen years later, in 2018, after immense clashes with the neighboring population. Eventually sixteen prefabricated residential modules, each with their own sanitary facilities, were built.

Since the private living areas are very small, they are compensated for by large communal areas. Those who wish to join the community can first visit the “guesthouse” in the completely renovated former service building. The large fruit garden is available to all and offers another way to get into contact with other residents. The project is a prototype of alternative housing that offers long-term homeless alcoholic men a chance for a dignified abode.

Join gaupenraub+/-, the Bundesstiftung Bauakademie and their other great guests on Thursday, Feburary 13, 2025 online or in person to discuss pending questions around homelessness through the lens of politics, administration and the building sector.
