Balkrishna Doshi’s lifetime’s work and impact on the evolution of the field and the built environment is being honored by Her Majesty the Queen, who has awarded him the 2022 RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture. Press announcements of the news have been carried by Dezeen, Archdaily, and The Guardian.

The Royal Gold Medal, one of the world’s highest distinguishments in the architectural field, perfectly accentuates Doshi’s incredible career, following an earlier nod in the form of the Pritzker Prize in 2018. We are happy to share this new accolade of Doshi’s, whose exceptional writings since the 1950s we published in one of our earliest volumes. Some of the featured works in Balkrishna Doshi: Writings on Architecture & Identity were published for the first time in this collection which is richly illustrated with more than 50 sketches hand-drawn personally by Doshi.

Enjoy a favourite quotation from the book: “I am therefore convinced that an architect and a designer has a much larger role to play in the community, the society, than what he does today. He should not just be a vehicle for the expression of different attitudes, but must be, through his skill and ingenuity, a builder of attitudes also.” (from the Essay Architecture and Attitudes, Balkrishna Doshi).
